Get Ready to Be Inspired by This 11-Year-Old Activist and TEDx Speaker
Never doubt that a single individual can change the world.
Genesis Butler wasted no time embarking on a life of animal advocacy. She went vegetarian at age 4 and vegan at 6 and soon persuaded her family to join her. By age 8, she was starting her own advocacy organization, and at 10, she gave her first TEDx Talk about ways vegan eating can heal the planet.
PETA and our longtime members Carlee and Laurie McGrath of the McGrath Family Foundation are honoring her with the first-ever Carlee and Laurie McGrath Young Hero for Animals Award. Emmy Award–winning journalist Jane Velez-Mitchell presented the award at a fundraising reception this past weekend at the Del Mar Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe, California.
Carlee and Laurie McGrath are passionate PETA supporters and pillars of our work to replace the use of animals in laboratories with advanced, humane science. They also understand and embrace the power of young people to grow the animal rights movement and help PETA as we constantly work to strengthen our online and social media presence to reach more kids and teens. It was in that spirit that PETA created The Carlee and Laurie McGrath Young Hero for Animals Award. It’s our hope that its first recipient will inspire young people and adults alike in their own advocacy for animals.
Genesis previously earned the title of PETA Kids’ Cutest Vegan Kid in the 2015 contest. And the best part? For Genesis, this is only the beginning.
