Fat Wallets and Thin Waists: PETA’s Plan for Alabama
Hot on the heels of Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley’s announcement of his plan to help relieve the state’s budget crisis by pushing for a statewide lottery, PETA is negotiating with outdoor advertisers to place a billboard near the state’s capital reminding residents that they can keep their wallets plump and their waistlines trim by simply ditching meat, dairy foods, and eggs, which are linked to chronic diseases with hefty medical bills.
“Alabama’s best bet for easing its budget crisis is encouraging residents to go vegan to reduce their sky-high rates of costly heart disease and stroke,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA’s billboard is a reminder that ditching meat, dairy foods, and eggs is a surefire way to hit the health jackpot.”
In addition to saving more than 100 animals every year from daily suffering and a terrifying death, going vegan reduces diners’ chances of developing heart disease by a whopping 32 percent, according to one of many large-scale studies at Oxford University. Leading medical experts have determined that healthy vegan meals can even reverse heart disease in people who already have clogged arteries. In addition, going vegan is associated with a reduced risk of suffering from diabetes, obesity, and cancer.
