PETA Praises President Biden’s New Executive Order Backing Cell-Based Meat
PETA is thanking President Joe Biden for signing a new executive order launching the National Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Initiative, which will, among other things, encourage development and innovation in the cell-based (or “clean”) meat industry.
This initiative will help create a more progressive, forward-thinking society and represents a path forward for protecting animals and human health.
Moving away from foods that require the mass breeding and killing of animals will spare countless cows, pigs, chickens, and others a miserable existence on crowded, filthy factory farms and a terrifying trip to the slaughterhouse. It will also reduce people’s risk of developing some of America’s top killers, including cancer, diabetes, and heart disease—as well as lower the associated healthcare costs.
PETA has long been a supporter of using cell cultures to replace the use of animals for food, most notably in 2008, when we offered a $1 million prize for the first commercially viable in vitro chicken. That incentive sparked debate that generated interest and investments from the food industry.
We look forward to the availability of more funding for plant-based agriculture and hunger-relief programs that include healthy vegan foods.
The Climate Catastrophe Is Already Here—Don’t Wait to Make a Difference
We can’t wait for cell-based meats to become widely available to do our part to alleviate the worst effects of climate change. The single best action you can take—for animals, the environment, and your own health—is to go vegan today. PETA will even help you do it.
