Tell Budweiser to Stop Mutilating Horses

Dear Mr. Doukeris:
I was shocked to learn that Anheuser-Busch mutilates Clydesdales by cutting off their tailbones, either partially or completely, for cosmetic reasons. Subjecting equines to tail amputation limits their means of protecting themselves from flies or other biting insects, which could increase their risk of being infected with West Nile virus or other pathogens transmitted via insects.
Horses also depend on their tail for communication and balance, and removing all or part of it restricts these functions. Tailbone amputation is so painful that it’s banned in many countries and 10 U.S. states (except when it’s medically necessary). Safety concerns that tails will get caught in the hitch equipment are not a justifiable excuse, as many humane alternatives exist, including braiding and wrapping, both of which are already commonly used by other draft horse owners.
Please immediately end the cruel and unnecessary practice of severing the Clydesdales’ tailbones. I will be purchasing other beers and encouraging everyone I know to do the same until the company stops mutilating horses in this way.
Sincerely,
