Speak Up for Dogs and Cats Warehoused for Blood: How You Can Help
Did you know that VCA Animal Hospitals and BluePearl Pet Hospital reportedly buy blood for transfusions from a crude Indiana-based operation that keeps nearly 1,000 cats and dogs warehoused for life? Learn how you can urge them to reconsider that relationship immediately.
A PETA undercover investigation into The Veterinarians’ Blood Bank (TVBB) found that workers bled animals who were elderly, emaciated, and sick with upper respiratory infections, bone cancer, and other ailments—putting those animals and the ones who would receive that blood at risk.
Dogs and Cats Warehoused for Blood: What You Can Do to Help
Distribute leaflets urging major veterinary chains to implement a policy against obtaining blood from captive animals and commit to using blood drawn only from healthy dogs and cats who live in homes with loving families.
There are over 1,000 VCA clinics in the U.S. and Canada and over 100 BluePearl clinics in the U.S. Find locations near you:
We’ll send you free leaflets that you can use to expose captive-animal blood banking and help us prevent other animals from suffering.
- Deliver leaflets to VCA and BluePearl clinics. Request leaflets from us to deliver to the staff at VCA and BluePearl veterinary clinics near you. Visit as many locations as you can and urge them to implement a policy against obtaining blood from captive animals. See our talking points below to guide you.
- Distribute leaflets to the public. Stand in front of a VCA or BluePearl veterinary clinic and distribute leaflets to its customers and anyone else who goes in. Urge them to speak up for cats and dogs by visiting PETA.org/Blood —and by talking to the staff inside if they’re a customer.
✔️ Be respectful to people you encounter, especially those with animals at the veterinary clinic.
✔️ Dress sharp! Appropriate attire and a tidy appearance are essential to delivering an animal rights message that will be well-received.
✔️ Use your phone (or a laptop) to show PETA’s investigative footage of sick cats and dogs imprisoned for their blood at TVBB.

Don’t stop there! If you’re a cat or dog guardian, talk to your veterinarian. Ask where your veterinary clinic gets blood for transfusions, and make sure it obtains blood only from animals who live in loving homes.
Organize a silent protest for dogs and cats imprisoned for blood to supply veterinary clinics. We’ll send you free supplies and invite local supporters to your event. Request a protest kit and include “I want to protest VCA/BluePearl” in the description box. Please specify if you are protesting at VCA or BluePearl. You can host a successful protest no matter where you are on your activism journey—we’ll help you!
Change is happening. Our landmark investigation of TVBB is already making a difference. After hearing from PETA and thousands of supporters like you, PetVet Care Centers dropped the crude operation as a supplier of blood products to its veterinary hospitals. State authorities also investigated, corroborated many of our findings, and required that TVBB make changes. But the animals imprisoned there still need help. Join us!
