Zanzibar Turtles Returned to the Ocean!
Update (November 13, 2024): Kwanza Resort in Tanzania was exhibiting sea turtles on its property in a small, barren, shallow concrete pool, where they swam in endless circles. The company’s Director of Marketing has confirmed that the turtles have since been safely returned to their natural habitat. Thank you to SUNRISE Resorts and Cruises for this compassionate decision and to all of you who spoke out for the turtles!

PETA has learned that Kwanza Resort in Tanzania is exhibiting sea turtles on its property in a small, barren, shallow concrete pool, where they swim in endless circles. Caseworkers urged the hotel owner to work with experts to rehabilitate the turtles, but our pleas appear to have been ignored. These animals need you to speak up for them now!
Sea turtles are intelligent, peaceful, and graceful. They spend their lives foraging and seeking shelter in coral reefs and exploring the ocean. As adults, these determined animals migrate in large groups over vast distances—up to thousands of miles—back to the sandy beaches where they hatched, to reproduce. The females are known to brave extreme obstacles to get home, and they’re notably loyal to their mates. Confinement for any purpose other than for necessary veterinary intervention can result in captive stress, which commonly leads to compromised immune systems and, subsequently, infections that can even prove fatal.
