UPDATE: Continue to Speak Out Against Glue Traps in Schools in Lancaster, Pennsylvania!
Update (September 14, 2023): Even though we were told by school officials that glue trap use would be reevaluated prior to the beginning of the 2023–24 school year (which began on August 21), PETA’s calls for an update have gone unanswered, and we’re told that these devices may remain in use. Please continue to send polite comments to the school officials listed below urging them to halt any use of glue traps and instead adopt humane rodent control measures!
PETA has received reports that glue traps are being used at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Lancaster, Pennsylvania—and presumably at all other schools in the School District of Lancaster. Heartbreaking photos taken at the school depict one mouse who became mired in glue and was reportedly taken away by maintenance staff in order to end her suffering.
Victims of these sadistic devices suffer immensely, succumbing to shock, dehydration, asphyxiation, and blood loss after ripping themselves apart in their frantic struggle to escape the gooey mess. They’re left exhausted and terrified, and it can take days for them to die—in fact, labels on the products instruct users to toss trapped animals into the garbage along with the traps! Furthermore, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cautions against the use of glue traps because of the human health risks they pose. These devices are indiscriminate, ensnaring countless “nontarget” species every year. Shockingly, despite having shared this information, PETA has received no assurance that the school system would end its use of glue traps and we were told that their continued use has been insisted upon, so your voice is desperately needed.
Please politely e-mail the following school officials and urge them to ditch glue traps immediately and to permanently adopt humane and far more effective alternatives:
