PETA Statement on Animal Welfare Violations at UT-Austin

Please see PETA Vice President Dr. Alka Chandna’s statement regarding federal documents that reveal three critical animal welfare violations at the University of Texas–Austin:

It appears that no animal is safe in the laboratories at the University of Texas–Austin—even beyond the cruel experiments conducted there. According to a just-posted federal inspection report obtained by PETA, experimenters failed to give adequate pain relief to a monkey who needed it, a marmoset escaped because a cage wasn’t properly secured—causing injury to another marmoset—and a vole was improperly euthanized and found alive, likely in a pile of dead bodies. Three serious issues with three species indicate that there are systemic problems woven into the fabric of UT-Austin’s laboratories. The university needs to suspend all animal experimentation and modernize its program to conduct research that helps humans without harming animals.
