Three PETA supporters in owl masks will cage themselves on Johns Hopkins University’s (JHU) campus on Tuesday in protest of JHU experimenter Shreesh Mysore’s appallingly cruel, admittedly worthless, and apparently illegal brain experiments on barn owls. The action comes two weeks after PETA filed a formal complaint with state officials alleging that Mysore failed to obtain mandatory permits for years.
When: Tuesday, March 9, 12 noon
Where: JHU, at the intersection of E. 34th and N. Charles streets, Baltimore
In his laboratory, Mysore cuts into barn owls’ skulls, implants electrodes in their brains, forces the birds into plastic tubes or jackets so cramped that they can’t move their wings, clamps their eyes open, and bombards them with sounds and lights for up to 12 hours. Eventually, they are killed.
“PETA is alerting the Johns Hopkins community to the animal suffering and waste of money happening behind closed laboratory doors,” says PETA Vice President Shalin Gala. “The university and taxpayers must stop giving Shreesh Mysore millions of dollars to torment and kill owls in experiments that do nothing to help humans.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
