Following U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s pledge to go vegetarian for Lent in honor of U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin’s late vegan son, PETA supporters will give away free vegan fish fillets—from the Bronx’s own No Carne Bodega—in her district today.

When:    Thursday, February 25, 12 noon

Where:    Roosevelt Avenue–Jackson Heights MTA station (at the intersection of 74th and 75th streets), Jackson Heights, Queens

“We’ve learned enough about fish to recognize that each one feels pain, has a distinct personality, and wants to keep right on swimming, so we show our empathy for them by choosing tasty vegan options that let fish live,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “Tommy Raskin spent his life passionately advocating for all animals, and PETA’s giveaway will help Rep. Ocasio-Cortez ‘bring people along’ with her as Rep. Raskin requested.”

Without any legal protections from mistreatment, fish are impaled, crushed, suffocated, or cut open and gutted, all while they’re still conscious. Many faux-fish options are available today, such as Gardein’s Fishless Filets, May Wah’s Golden Fish Fillets, and New Wave Foods’ new plant-based shrimp.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
