Just in time for Valentine’s Day, PETA has organized a sweet surprise for a city recently ranked as one of the worst for heart health in the U.S.: ads on local buses encouraging everyone to protect their health and animals by “breaking up” with meat.

“PETA is asking everyone to show some love to chicks and other animals this Valentine’s Day by choosing delicious, heart-healthy vegan meals,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “When it comes to feeling pain and fear and valuing their lives, a chicken is no different from a human being—and no less deserving of compassion.”

Birds killed for their flesh are crammed by the tens of thousands into filthy sheds and bred to grow such unnaturally large upper bodies that their legs often become crippled under the weight. At the slaughterhouse, their throats are often cut while they’re still conscious and many are scalded to death in defeathering tanks.

Each person who goes vegan saves nearly 200 animals every year; reduces their risk of suffering from cancer, heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and obesity; and helps prevent future epidemics and pandemics. SARS, swine flu, bird flu, and COVID-19 all stemmed from confining and killing animals for food.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
