This year’s Super Bowl falls under the shadow of a deadly virus that originated in a meat market, so PETA is hoping to strike a chord with a new billboard that just went up near local meaty eateries, including Wingstop, urging football fans to celebrate the big game without chewing on chicken corpses.
“The Super Bowl is no game for the gentle chickens who are murdered en masse for snacks,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is asking fans to let chickens keep their wings—and their lives—by tucking into spicy Buffalo cauliflower bites, loaded vegan nachos, and other pandemic-proof vegan eats.”
PETA’s “Chicken in Reverse” video reveals that birds killed for their flesh are crammed into filthy sheds and bred to grow such unnaturally large upper bodies that their legs often become crippled under the weight. At slaughterhouses, their throats are cut, often while they’re still conscious, and many are scalded to death in defeathering tanks. More than 700 million chickens are slaughtered for Super Bowl Sunday alone.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview—offers free vegan starter kits as well as lists of ready-to-heat wings available at grocery stores and easy vegan game-day recipes on its website. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
The billboard is located at 2800 E. Colonial Dr. (at the intersection with Primrose Drive), directly in front of Einstein Bros. Bagels, across from Wingstop and Chipotle, and just 0.1 miles from Starbucks, The Honey Baked Ham Company, and Charleys Philly Steaks.
