Kissing her adopted dog Floyd’s paw and hanging out with him as she rehearses her lines, Nancy Drew and The Half of It star Leah Lewis appears in a new PETA campaign urging people to find the love of their lives at a local animal shelter. PETA and Lewis are releasing the campaign as a tribute to Floyd, who tragically passed away soon after it was shot.
In an accompanying video spot, Lewis shares Floyd’s sweet adoption story, revealing that he was a “foster fail”: “Within like … two days, I was like, ‘I have to adopt this dog,’” she says. “It kind of unlocks … this nurturing part of you that I never really knew that I had, and I think that it’s really special.”
Lewis urges people to do right by dogs by always adopting them from animal shelters and never buying them from breeders or pet shops, which contributes to the homeless-animal overpopulation crisis. Around 70 million dogs and cats are homeless in the U.S. at any given time. An estimated 10% of those end up in animal shelters, where many have to be euthanized for humane reasons and/or because there aren’t enough good homes for them.
“The experience of taking care of a dog and having that companion and … building that friendship, it’s really all the same,” Lewis points out. “So why not take in a dog [who] needs a home?”
Lewis joins a long list of celebrities—including Krysten Ritter, Tom Hardy, Gregg Sulkin, John Stamos, Sia, and Emma Kenney—who have teamed up with PETA or its affiliates to promote animal adoption.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
