PETA wants the “Bratwurst Capital of the World” in “America’s Dairyland” to turn over a vegan leaf in 2021—so the group has plastered local buses with ads featuring Clueless star Alicia Silverstone and her son, Bear, in a New Year’s–themed tribute to the nearly 30-year-old iconic PETA photo starring Paul and Linda McCartney.

The new campaign stresses kindness because, as Bear tells his famous mom in an exclusive video interview with PETA, “The best lesson that you’ve taught me is to be kind.”

“Perhaps the most important New Year’s resolution of all is to be kind to your own body, animals, and the planet by going vegan,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “As we battle a pandemic that began in a meat market, PETA is encouraging everyone to help prevent future ones by respecting animals enough to leave them off our plates.”

Each person who goes vegan saves nearly 200 animals every year; reduces their risk of suffering from heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer; and helps prevent future epidemics and pandemics. SARS, swine flu, bird flu, and COVID-19 all stemmed from confining and killing animals for food.

Silverstone and Bear are part of a long list of celebrities—including Natalie Portman, Joaquin Phoenix, and Cam Newton—who’ve teamed up with PETA to encourage people to stop eating animals.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview—offers a free vegan starter kit (available here) full of recipes, tips, and more.
