Paulina Rubio Dons Ugly Holiday Sweater for PETA Plea: Don’t Give Animals as Gifts!

Just in time for the gift-giving season, music superstar Paulina Rubio is wearing her finest, ugliest sweater for a new PETA video that shines a light on the worst holiday gift of all: a dog or cat.
“Now, I know that may sound confusing—this is a PETA PSA after all, and of course, I love animals,” the “Tú y Yo” singer explains. “That’s actually why I’m here to tell you NOT to give them as gifts …. Because once the decorations come down and that initial spark of excitement passes, many people realize that caring for an animal is a lot of work. And that leaves many dogs and cats abandoned in the streets or left in an animal shelter.”
To drive home the message, Rubio—plus adorable rescued pup Eric—also appears in an accompanying PETA print ad.
Every year after the holidays, shelters see a spike in unwanted animals as people are unable to or uninterested in caring for the surprise puppies, kittens, or other animals they received as presents. Buying an animal from a breeder or pet store also takes a potential home away from a dog or cat in a local animal shelter or adoption group.
PETA urges everyone who’s considering adding an animal to the family to evaluate whether they can commit to providing them with a lifelong home, have enough time to exercise and housetrain them, and are able to pay for basic as well as emergency veterinary care, food, toys, and other essentials. Anyone who’s ready to make that commitment should look for their new best friend at their local animal shelter or adoption organization.
Rubio is part of a long list of celebrities—including Penélope Cruz, Kate del Castillo, Edward James Olmos, George Lopez, and Jesse & Joy—who have teamed up with PETA to promote kindness to animals.
