Tomorrow, a choir of PETA supporters—some wearing sweaters featuring a stuffed mutilated sheep protruding from the front and back and the words “Wool Hurts”—will gather at Campus Martius Park to urge passersby to shop for only vegan clothing gifts and never buy wool, because no one needs to wear anything stolen from a tormented lamb. They’ll treat the crowd to a delightful concert of classic Christmas carols with a twist—including “Violent Night” and “Let Wool Go, Let It Go.”
When: Wednesday, December 16, 12 noon
Where: Campus Martius Park, 800 Woodward Ave. (near the corner of Cadillac Square), Detroit
PETA and its international affiliates have exposed egregious cruelty to animals at more than 100 wool industry operations spanning four continents, revealing that sheep are beaten, kicked, thrown, cut, and mutilated and that—once their wool production declines—many are slashed across the throat, sometimes while fully conscious.
“It’s the season of goodwill, so PETA is asking shoppers to help stop gentle sheep from being beaten bloody for wool sweaters, coats, hats, and scarves,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA will serenade holiday shoppers with a rousing appeal to leave wool right where it belongs: on its original owner.”
Broadcast-quality video footage from PETA’s exposés is available upon request. PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
