Detroit — Baseball might be the national pastime, but vegetarian dishes could soon be the national food if the offerings at baseball games are any indication. That’s why PETA has ranked the Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Major League Ballparks, and Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers, has grabbed second place.
“Miguel Cabrera may have won the Triple Crown for Detroit in 2012, but Comerica Park has its own Triple Crown contenders for 2013: an Italian mock sausage, a vegan riblet sandwich, and a veggie dog,” says PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange. “Ballparks across the country are showing their fans respect by offering healthy and humane food that will help keep them around to cheer on the home team for many years to come.”
The Tigers’ lineup of healthful and animal-friendly food continues with the vegetable stir-fry, fresh-fruit cup, and hummus with vegetables. Tigers fans can also feast on a traditional veggie burger, fresh salads, and good old corn on the cob.
For the sixth time in the past seven years, top honors go to Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies. Menu standouts include the faux-chicken patty, the mock beefsteak, and the vegetarian “pit beef” smothered in barbecue sauce. Rounding out the top five are Nationals Park (Washington Nationals), AT&T Park (San Francisco Giants), and Angel Stadium (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim). In the minor leagues, the portobello mushroom burger, tofu-noodle entrée, and homemade veggie burger on a pretzel bun made the Tulsa Drillers’ ONEOK Field a big winner.
The Tigers will receive a framed certificate from PETA. To see the complete rankings, please visit PETA’s major league and minor league blog posts.
