Los Angeles — Her unique looks and positive attitude—and her “dude’s” obvious devotion to her—have won Lil Bub fans from around the world. And now, just in time for “Adopt a Shelter Cat” Month in June, the Internet sensation is starring in a brand-new PETA ad that proclaims, “Bub thinks you should adopt, not buy, & spay or neuter!” The ad goes on to explain that millions of lovable cats are homeless, just as Bub once was, and that “fixing” and adopting—not buying—are the best ways to help our furry friends.
“Animal shelters are full of cats—and dogs—who are waiting for the right dude or lady to whisk them away to a loving family,” says PETA Online Marketing Manager Ashley Palmer. “PETA encourages everyone with available time, resources, and love to find—and ‘fix’—their new best friend at their local shelter.”
Bub knows firsthand the effects of the companion-animal overpopulation crisis: As the runt of a litter born to an outdoor stray, Bub began her life homeless, and her fosters struggled to find the special-needs cat a home. Bub’s dude soon came along to adopt and spay her, but millions of other cats aren’t as lucky: An estimated 6 to 8 million dogs and cats end up in U.S. animal shelters every year, and half of them have to be euthanized because there simply aren’t enough good homes for them. But everyone can minimize the number of homeless cats and dogs by ensuring that their animals are spayed or neutered—a simple procedure that saves millions of lives.
Bub and her dude also take care to promote responsible animal guardianship, such as never declawing.
Lil Bub isn’t the only nonhuman PETA spokesperson: The Artist star Uggie, who is also a rescue, teamed up with PETA to promote adoption.
