Below, please find a statement from PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman in response to reports that ExxonMobil, one of the last remaining top sponsors of the deadly Iditarod dog race, has reported its third consecutive quarter of losses:
Exxon is bleeding profits and laying off its workers, yet it’s still pumping money—to the tune of a quarter of a million dollars a year—into the cruel Iditarod dog race, in which dogs are forced to run so far and so fast that some die after inhaling their own vomit. This struggling company would be wise to listen to PETA and cut ties with the race—a move that would drive people to its gas stations, not away from them.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. More information about the group’s campaign against ExxonMobil is available on PETA’s website as well as here and here.
