A damning federal report of unlawful animal suffering documented at FPL Food has prompted PETA to issue a consumer advisory: Recently distributed packages of FPL Food beef may include parts of a cow who ran out of the company’s Augusta slaughterhouse and collapsed in its parking lot before being shot in the head and slashed across the throat.

On September 19, the cow climbed over another cow who had just been stunned and fell up to 6 feet onto a table. A U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) agent then saw the animal run—slipping and falling the entire time—through areas where other cows were bled and skinned before reaching the slaughterhouse parking lot, where FPL Food staff shot the dazed cow in the head and cut the animal’s throat. USDA staff documented numerous wounds on the cow’s limbs and abdomen.

“Shoppers beware: The FPL Food beef in your local meat case might include the flesh of an animal who ran in terror before being chased down, shot in the head, and cut across the throat,” says PETA Senior Vice President of Cruelty Investigations Daphna Nachminovitch. “The only sure way to keep cruelty out of your grocery cart is to go vegan, and PETA stands ready to help anyone make the switch.”

FPL Food sells ground beef and steaks under the brand names Châtel Farms, Southern River Farms, and True To Nature. True to Nature is distributed to Publix stores across Georgia. FPL Food reports that it has supplied beef to Walmart for 16 years. The packaging’s USDA mark of inspection would include “M332” or “EST. 332.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview—urges consumers who bought products from these brands after September 19 to return them to the place of purchase and offers everyone a free vegan starter kit filled with recipes and tips for making the transition.
