Company Refuses to Help Stop Painful Dehorning of Calves

San Diego — PETA members—led by a “cow” wearing bandages where her horns should be and holding a sign that reads, “CPK: Cheese From Mutilated Cows”—will hold a spirited protest outside the California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) in San Diego on Friday. Their point? That even though PETA has explained to the company in detail about the cruelty involved in burning off calves’ horn tissue with a hot iron or caustic paste, CPK officials have refused to ask the company’s cheese suppliers to end this barbaric practice.

As shown in PETA’s dehorning video exposé, narrated by Academy Award nominee Casey Affleck, workers on dairy farms commonly burn off horn tissue by using hot irons or a caustic paste. The animals struggle and cry out in pain during these procedures. Breeding for naturally hornless, or “polled,” cows eliminates any need for this mutilation.
“Everything from common sense to scientific studies tells us that calves experience excruciating pain when their horn tissue is chemically burned off with a caustic paste or hot iron,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Instead of standing idly by, California Pizza Kitchen should be taking action to help phase out this painful mutilation of baby cows.”
