Because interest in going vegan is at an all-time high, Thanksgiving is fast becoming “ThanksVegan,” and to mark the happy, healthy transition, PETA is running its “Grace” ad—in which a little girl makes a few pointed comments about turkeys while saying grace at the dinner table—on The Sports Network during Saturday’s Vancouver Whitecaps game.
PETA’s national ThanksVegan campaign also includes pro-vegan billboards in several cities as well as giveaways of free Tofurky roasts and vegan starter kits outside grocery stores across the country. Sobeys, Safeway, and Save-On-Foods are participating in ThanksVegan to spotlight their ready-to-roast vegan turkeys and other animal-free options.
“Once people understand that turkeys have feelings, love their families, and value their lives, just as humans do, they’ll want to have a Tofurky on the table,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “This year, PETA is pulling out all the stops to help families enjoy a beautiful ThanksVegan that gives everyone something to be thankful for.”
Turkeys are caring parents and spirited explorers who can live up to 10 years, but those raised for food are normally slaughtered when they’re between 12 and 26 weeks old—and millions are killed each year for Thanksgiving alone. The young birds are hung by their feet from metal shackles and dragged through an electrified bath, and they’re often still conscious when their throats are slit and they’re dumped into scalding-hot defeathering tanks.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview—is offering a brand-new ultimate Canadian ThanksVegan guide (available here) filled with shopping tips, recipes, and more.
