La Jolla, Calif. — In the wake of a San Diego jury’s acquittal of a man who had been prosecuted for vandalism for chalking a sidewalk, a chalk-wielding PETA member will descend on California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) in La Jolla to cover the sidewalk with drawings of mutilated baby cows and messages such as “CPK: Cheese From Mutilated Cows.”
When: Wednesday, July 3, 3 p.m.
Where: California Pizza Kitchen, 3363 Nobel Dr. (near the intersection with Villa La Jolla Drive), La Jolla
The action is the latest in PETA’s campaign calling on California Pizza Kitchen officials to ask its cheese suppliers to phase out dehorning, a painful process in which calves’ sensitive horn tissue is burned off with a hot iron or caustic paste. As Academy Award nominee Casey Affleck explains in PETA’s dehorning video exposé, calves struggle and cry out in pain during these procedures, which can be avoided simply by breeding for naturally hornless, or “polled,” cows.
“PETA will use everything at our disposal to call on California Pizza Kitchen to help phase out dehorning, whether that means hitting the streets with protest signs or hitting the sidewalk with protest artwork,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “California Pizza Kitchen has the power to make a world of difference for baby cows who currently face the excruciating pain of having their sensitive horn tissue burned off.”
