San Diego — The San Diego Padres are in the thick of the race for dominance in the National League West standings, but Petco Park has already made its mark in PETA’s 2013 rankings of the Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Major League Ballparks. That’s because the Padres have locked down the number nine spot.
“Petco Park’s tasty vegetarian options are flying from the concession stands even faster than Everth Cabrera flies around the bases,” says PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange. “Ballparks across the country are showing their fans respect by offering healthy and humane food that will help keep them around to cheer on the home team for many years to come.”
The Padres’ lineup of healthful and animal-friendly food starts with the delicious vegetable sushi and the hearty grilled tofu wrap. Other top-notch options include veggie dogs and burgers, the grilled vegetable sandwich, and the tangy hummus with vegetables. Fans looking for lighter fare can choose from fruit cups, colorful fruit salad, and fresh vegetable salads.
For the sixth time in the past seven years, top honors go to Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies. Menu standouts include the faux-chicken patty, the mock beefsteak, and the vegetarian “pit beef” smothered in barbecue sauce.
Rounding out the top five are Comerica Park (Detroit Tigers), Nationals Park (Washington Nationals), AT&T Park (San Francisco Giants), and Angel Stadium (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim).
In the minor leagues, the portobello mushroom burger, tofu-noodle entrée, and homemade veggie burger on a pretzel bun made the Tulsa Drillers’ ONEOK Field a big winner.
The Padres will receive a framed certificate from PETA. To see the complete rankings, please visit PETA’s major league and minor league blog posts.
