PETA Calls On Bedford County Neighborhood to Halt Geese Slaughter

Cruel, Ill-Conceived Plan Won’t Stop More Geese From Moving in, Says Group

Bedford County, Virginia—Today, PETA sent an urgent letter to the Lake Vista Property Owners Association in Bedford County urging it to call off a planned lethal “cull” of geese living in the neighborhood. In the letter, PETA points out that the geese will experience pain and fear when they are rounded up, stuffed onto trucks, and sent to slaughter and that more geese will simply move in and take their place as long as the neighborhood and its food supply remain attractive to the birds, leading to a costly annual killing cycle. The group also sent a copy of its humane goose-control guide, which contains proven methods of controlling wild goose populations humanely and effectively and is posting an action alert on its popular website.

“Killing geese isn’t just inhumane—it’s ineffective,” says PETA Senior Vice President of Cruelty Investigations Daphna Nachminovitch. “PETA is asking Lake Vista to be patient and skip the goose slaughter in favor of a long-term solution that everyone—including the geese—can live with.”
