On Tuesday, a “tiger” will lead PETA supporters in an angry protest outside the court hearing for notorious animal exhibitor Jeff Lowe, operator of the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park (G.W. Zoo) in Oklahoma, over charges for possessing exotic animals and operating a business without a license. The charges in Las Vegas come from a 2017 PETA complaint, which resulted in authorities raiding his home and seizing two big-cat cubs and a lemur.
When: Tuesday, August 18, 8:30 a.m.
Where: At the intersection of Lewis Avenue and S. Third Street, Las Vegas
“Jeff Lowe is a felon with a history of animal welfare citations,” says PETA Foundation Deputy General Counsel for Captive Animal Law Enforcement Brittany Peet. “PETA will be outside the courthouse to make the point that his days of tormenting wild animals are numbered.”
This summer, the U.S. Department of Agriculture cited G.W. Zoo for numerous failures to provide animals with adequate veterinary care, among other citations. Recently, PETA released photographs and video footage from that inspection showing a “lethargic, depressed, and thin” young lion; big cats and wolves suffering from flystrike (a condition in which flies, usually drawn to accumulated animal waste, bite animals and lay eggs on them and the hatched maggots eat away at their skin), and other wounds; and the partially burned and decomposing carcass of a big cat, among other issues.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
