Tinsley Mortimer Appears on New PETA Billboard: ‘Buy Shoes, Not Dogs’
TV Star and Recent Chicago Transplant Urges Fans to Adopt From Shelters, Where Millions of Homeless Animals Wait for Loving Homes

The Real Housewives of New York City star Tinsley Mortimer is officially settling down in Chicago—and she’s marking the occasion by appearing on a larger-than-life pro-adoption PETA billboard, which just went up in River North.
“[W]hen you find out how many homeless animals that are in need of a loving home and family, there’s just absolutely no excuse to buy from a breeder,” Mortimer explains in a video for PETA. She adopted her beloved dogs (and ad co-stars), Strawberry and Shortcake, and says, “A dog, I think, really knows when they’ve been rescued. They know that you’ve taken them out of a situation and given them a loving home. And you have given them a second chance at life. What they give you, though, is so much more rewarding.”
Around 70 million dogs and cats are homeless in the U.S. at any given time. An estimated 10% of the U.S. homeless-animal population is taken in by animal shelters each year, and many must be euthanized as a result of chronic neglect or because there aren’t enough good homes for them. The rest struggle to survive on the streets, where they are hit by cars, are attacked by other animals and people, and suffer and die from diseases, infections, and other injuries. That’s why PETA urges everyone to adopt animals from shelters—and never buy from breeders or pet stores, which contribute to the homeless-animal overpopulation crisis—and always have their animal companions spayed and neutered.
Mortimer joins a long list of celebrities—including fellow Real Housewives stars Joanna Krupa, Bethenny Frankel, and Adriana de Moura—who’ve worked with PETA or its affiliates to promote kindness to animals.
The billboard is located at 319 W. Ontario St., between N. Orleans and N. Franklin streets.
