Don’t be a blockhead—unless you’re a tofu blockhead! That’s the message of PETA’s limited-edition “Tofu Never Caused a Pandemic” costume, which comes with an adorable tofu-block head, a sign, and leaflets for trick-or-treaters featuring delicious tofu recipes—because while confining and killing animals for food has led to SARS, bird flu, swine flu, and COVID-19, tofu has never started a pandemic.
“PETA’s Halloween costume makes the point that while breeding animals for food breeds killer diseases, too, tofu is a clean and wholesome food,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “It may not have occurd to everyone until now, but versatile vegan foods like tofu might just be the key to stopping nasty contagious diseases before they start.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview—notes that tofu has some soyprising benefits. It is cheaper than meat, doesn’t kill any animals, is packed with protein, contains zero cholesterol, and can lower one’s risk of suffering from heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and many other life-threatening health issues. PETA’s leaflets include a variety of delicious tofu-based recipes, including General Tso’s Tofu, Easy Tofu Scramble, and Chocolate Mousse Pie.
Resources on PETA’s website include free vegan starter kits and a list of vegan-friendly restaurant chains. For more information, please visit PETA.org or click here.
