In cars plastered with protest signs and inflatable orcas, a group of PETA supporters will drive circles around the Alexandria AAA office in a socially distanced protest against the company’s sales of tickets to SeaWorld.
When: Thursday, July 2, 1 p.m.
Where: 2231 Eisenhower Ave. (near Mill Road), Alexandria
“No reputable company would want to be mentioned in the same breath as SeaWorld, which keeps whales, orcas and other dolphins in concrete prisons,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on AAA to leave this cruel abusement park in the dust.”
In nature, orcas, other dolphins, and belugas maintain dynamic relationships with large social networks, choose their own partners, and swim freely in the huge expanse of the ocean. Following a PETA campaign, SeaWorld stopped breeding orcas—but it’s still breeding belugas and bottlenose dolphins (sometimes forcibly after being drugged), and all the marine mammals in its parks are locked down for life in small, concrete tanks. PETA is calling on SeaWorld to end its breeding programs and develop seaside sanctuaries.
Numerous organizations and companies—including the Miami Dolphins, STA Travel, Taco Bell, and JetBlue, Southwest, and United airlines—have cut ties with SeaWorld.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, which is a supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
