A new PETA video released today reveals that a bear, a capuchin monkey, a snake, an owl, and a chinchilla have all been used for Pamela Adlon‘s FX on Hulu series, Better Things—even though PETA has pointed out to the star and co-creator that wild animals suffer when trained and confined for use on TV shows.

The video shows that animals used for film or TV are typically separated from their mothers, deprived of proper care, and forced to live in extreme confinement. PETA and law-enforcement investigations have uncovered animals being whipped, illegally imported, and kept in deplorable conditions by animal suppliers for Hollywood. The bright lights and loud noise of a TV set can also be extremely stressful for these animals, who naturally shun human contact.

Tiger King has pulled back the curtain on the violence and deprivation typically behind animal acts,” says PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange. “PETA is calling on Pamela Adlon to stop treating wild animals like props and punch lines and join the growing list of responsible directors who use only CGI or animatronics to portray animals in their projects.”

PETA urges anyone who witnesses cruelty to animals in the entertainment industry to report it by calling the group’s confidential whistleblower hotline at 323-210-2233 or by sending an e-mail to [email protected].

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—opposes speciesism, which is the human-supremacist worldview that other animals are disposable. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
