Video: Indian Spectacled Cobra Pulled From 15-Foot Well

This PETA video, released today, shows an emergency response team from the India-based animal protection organization Animal Rahat (“rahat” means “relief”) pulling off the rescue of a cobra who was trapped in a deep water-filled well.

Without help, the snake would have died in that dank hole—but Animal Rahat arrived on the scene and immediately jumped into action, lowering a long stick with a hook at one end into the well for the cobra to latch on to. It took several tries, but finally, the snake wrapped his body around the hook, and the rescuers carefully pulled him up to freedom. They released him in a safe area, where he slithered away.

“Cobras may have a scary reputation, but Animal Rahat workers never turn their back on any animal in need, whether loved or feared,” says Animal Rahat Veterinarian Dr. Naresh Chandra Upreti. “We hope this rescue inspires people around the world to come to the aid of animals in distress—and whenever necessary, enlist the help of professionals.”

Animal Rahat is run by a dedicated staff that includes veterinarians, veterinary assistants, animal caretakers, and a community educator. Its efforts in behalf of animals include rescuing those who’ve fallen into deep wells and informing the community about the importance of working to prevent incidents like this one.
