Bars and restaurants may be closing in response to COVID-19, but there’s a new hotspot downtown: PETA’s outdoor shower, where a supporter will wash herself in a World Water Day demonstration on Thursday. The protester will remind people that filthy meat farms and markets breed deadly pathogens like the novel coronavirus—and that eating just 1 pound of meat wastes more water than taking showers for six months.
When: Thursday, March 19, 12 noon
Where: The intersection of 5th Avenue and Broadway, Nashville
“While we all fight COVID-19 by washing our hands, this PETA protester will wash her whole body as a reminder that the meat and dairy industries are guzzling up our water supply and making people sick,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Going vegan is the best way to reduce animal suffering, conserve water, and stop polluting the Earth.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. The group notes that growing water-intensive crops simply to feed animals raised for food consumes more than half the water used in the U.S. Runoff from animal agriculture is also one of the leading causes of river and lake pollution—and it can contaminate groundwater with viruses and bacteria.
