As part of its longstanding campaign to encourage people to keep chickens and other animals off their plates, PETA has posted a pro-vegan billboard near Wendy’s, McDonald’s, and other fast-food restaurants in the Government Hill neighborhood.

“Chickens are wonderful, gentle birds who value their lives and don’t deserve to end up as fried fast food,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA’s message is that the best meal is one that nobody had to die for—we can eat delicious vegan food and let chickens live.”

PETA’s “Chicken in Reverse” video shows that birds killed for their flesh are crammed by the tens of thousands into filthy sheds and bred to grow such unnaturally large upper bodies that their legs often become crippled under the weight. At the slaughterhouse, their throats are often cut while they’re still conscious, and many are scalded to death in defeathering tanks. Every person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals each year.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that many fast-food restaurants now offer vegan options, including the tofu Sofritas from Chipotle, the breakfast sandwich with Beyond Meat vegan sausage patties from Dunkin’ Donuts, and the Impossible Whopper from Burger King.

PETA’s billboard is located along I-35 Frontage Road, just west of N. Walters Street, facing west.

PETA opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview that fosters violence toward other animals. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
