A Compassionate Action Award is on its way from PETA to Milwaukee County Transit System employee Jamie Grabowski, who brought two lost dogs aboard her bus and helped reunite them with their grateful guardians.
As Grabowski was finishing her shift around 12:30 a.m. on December 18, she noticed the dogs running loose on a busy street. She quickly pulled over and coaxed them aboard before contacting local law enforcement, who determined that they belonged to a family nearby. “I was a little worried, as I had only been in the job for three months, but I thought about my own dogs and how I would want someone to be kind and help them,” she tells PETA. “I didn’t know if they were cold, how long they had been running for, or where they came from. I knew I had to get them home.”
“Thanks to Jamie Grabowski’s compassion and quick thinking, two beloved animal companions were saved from a dangerous situation and returned home,” says PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange. “PETA hopes this story will inspire people to keep an eye out for animals in need and to do whatever it takes to get them to safety.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—reminds all dog guardians to keep their animal companions near them on walks using a leash and a comfortable, secure harness and to keep a close eye on them when they’re outdoors.
In July, PETA recognized another Milwaukee County Transit System employee, Yaghnam Yaghnam, for saving a turtle from the road during his route. Grabowski will receive a framed certificate and a box of vegan cookies.
