Before Christmas, PETA supporters and a “coyote” delivered petitions with 20,000 signatures to Canada Goose CEO Dani Reiss urging him to stop selling jackets made with fur and down—and on Christmas Eve, one campaigner was surprised by what she found on her doorstep: The petitions had been dumped at her door inside a Christmas bag.
“Canada Goose shareholders might be surprised to see the company thumbing its nose at thousands of kind people who’ve simply urged it to stop the suffering of sensitive geese and coyotes who are violently killed for the fur and feathers used for its parkas,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Cruelty is par for the course—even on Christmas—for this callous brand, and PETA is urging everyone to avoid Canada Goose as long as it continues to profit from animal suffering and death.”
Coyotes used for Canada Goose’s fur trim can suffer in painful steel traps for days before they’re shot or bludgeoned to death. Mother coyotes desperate to get back to their starving pups have been known to attempt to chew off their own legs to escape. Ducks and geese used for down are typically shipped in all weather extremes to slaughterhouses, where their throats are cut. Canada Goose stopped claiming that its standards ensure that its suppliers don’t abuse animals after PETA filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, which sparked an investigation.
PETA’s motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear,” and we oppose speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. Many of the petition signatures were gathered at Morrissey’s 2019 North American concert tour, and they represent the hundreds of thousands of people who’ve already signed various PETA petitions against Canada Goose’s fur-and-feather jackets.
