Ana Campos—a private investigator who’s been a critical part of PETA’s on-the-ground efforts to stop SeaQuest’s aquarium and petting zoo from setting up shop in the Galleria mall—has been named one of PETA’s 2019 Outstanding Activists, a select group of top animal rights advocates across the country.

Campos has organized protests, attended city meetings, e-mailed and called city officials, and joined PETA and the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida in filing a lawsuit challenging the city’s issuance of SeaQuest’s zoning permit. Earlier this year, she mobilized hundreds of people to speak out against the city of Coconut Creek’s decision to hire a trapper to catch and kill 175 Egyptian geese—and in less than 24 hours, the city canceled the contract and agreed to work with a humane wildlife consultant instead. And as a private investigator, Campos helps guardians find their lost or abducted animal companions.

“Ana Campos doesn’t hesitate to spring into action when animals are in danger, whether geese are facing execution or an exploitative aquarium is coming to town,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is honoring her tireless dedication to keeping cruelty to animals out of southeast Florida.”

Each Outstanding Activist award winner will receive a plaque.

PETA’s motto is “Animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way,” and the group opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
