For saving animals from certain death at live markets and helping to block a slaughterhouse from opening on Long Island, among other victories, Katerina Trabazo has been named one of PETA’s 2019 Outstanding Activists, a select group of top animal rights advocates across the country.
As the cofounder of Brooklyn-Queens Animal Save, Trabazo negotiated the surrender of a turkey and a rabbit from a live market in Queens—and both animals are now thriving in their new homes. She also has held numerous vigils outside Brooklyn’s gruesome live markets—where animals are slaughtered onsite—and has saved many animals from being killed. “The law treats these animals as though they are inanimate objects, but we know that they are feeling individuals who want to live,” she told Their Turn earlier this year. By using this commonsense approach, Trabazo and her partner were even able to start a series of talks with a live market owner about reopening his business as a vegan market.
“Katerina is changing hearts and minds in Queens and beyond through her dedicated animal activism,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Animals used for food and in other ghastly ways have a true ally in Katerina, and PETA is honoring her for making the world a kinder place.”
Each recipient of an Outstanding Activist award will receive a plaque.
PETA’s motto is “Animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way,” and the group opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
