‘Skinned Coyote’ to Lead Protest at New Canada Goose Store

PETA Supporters Will Urge Shoppers to Shun New Store Peddling Fur-and-Feather Jackets

On Saturday, a pack of PETA supporters along with activists from the Canada Goose Pressure Campaign and FurFree Toronto will be holding a “skinned coyote” and a trap while leading a spirited protest outside Canada Goose’s new store in the CF Sherway Gardens mall. Protesters will hold a banner reading, “Canada Goose Cruelty Sold Here,” to urge shoppers to stay away until the retailer stops selling coyote fur and goose down.

“Every Canada Goose coat represents the suffering of coyotes who were caught in painful steel traps and geese who were violently killed,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on shoppers to avoid Canada Goose as long as it continues to profit from animal suffering and death.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”—points out that trapped coyote mothers desperate to get back to their starving pups have tried to chew off their own legs to escape and that many trapped animals succumb to the elements, blood loss, infection, or attacks by predators before trappers return to kill them. Ducks and geese used for down are typically shipped in all weather extremes to slaughterhouses, where they’re stunned, their throats are cut, and their bodies are dunked into defeathering tanks.

Following a PETA complaint and a subsequent Federal Trade Commission investigation, Canada Goose has stopped claiming that its standards ensure that its suppliers don’t abuse animals.
