Video: This Once-Lonely Deaf Dog Finally Has a Good Home for the Holidays

The freezing winter months used to be a nightmare for Pip, who was kept isolated in a pen outdoors even as temperatures fell and the ground froze. But this winter will be different: His owner decided that he didn’t want him anymore and let PETA find him a loving home—and a new PETA video released today shows his overwhelming joy (and his first cautious steps) when he’s finally able to leave his pen.

After spending a few days at the Norfolk SPCA—where staff realized that he was deaf—Pip was adopted. For the first time, he’ll spend the holiday season indoors, cozy and cherished by his new family.

“The home they can see from their lonely position in the backyard may be warm and bright inside, but Christmas isn’t at all merry for dogs left out in the cold,” says PETA Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “PETA urges everyone to make sure dogs get to enjoy the comfort and joy of the holiday season indoors with the rest of the family—and to pass on the message to their neighbors.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. More information about the group’s work to help dogs and cats is available here.
