Today, PETA sent a letter to Facebook urging the platform to reinstate PETA’s Super Bowl ad “Last Longer,” which Facebook deleted last week over purported violations of its “nudity and sexual activity” clause.
PETA points out that the satirical video—which was first released in 2017 to showcase the connection between healthy vegan eating and virility and was recently re-promoted by PETA in the wake of the Game Changers documentary—features no nudity and shows only actors who are not engaging in actual sexual activity. Furthermore, Facebook’s policy restricts the display of sexual activity “unless it is posted for educational, humorous, or satirical purposes,” meaning that Last Longer—a comical clip of a meat-eater underperforming in the bedroom—is not in violation of any aspect of Facebook’s policy.
“Of all the things to censor, Facebook is choosing a video about eating vegetables,” says PETA Vice President Joel Bartlett. “PETA is calling on Facebook to follow its own guidelines and restore our harmless, humorous video or toss their guidelines in the garbage along with that meat that needs throwing out.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that saturated fat in meat, eggs, and dairy foods can cause high cholesterol, which leads to plaque buildup and hardening of the arteries, slowing the flow of blood to all of the body’s organs, not just the heart. Low-fat vegan meals have been shown to address the physical causes involved in the vast majority of impotence cases, including high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, prostate cancer or inflammation, and hormonal imbalances. And of course, each person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals every year.
In July, PETA purchased shares in Facebook in order to influence the company from the inside after the platform upped its use of warning screens on PETA’s eyewitness videos, a move that significantly hampered the group’s ability to expose animal suffering to a wide audience.
PETA opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
