PETA Says That Everyone Should Pardon a Turkey at Thanksgiving

Lawmakers involved in the impeachment hearings are in for an eyeful tomorrow: A human-sized PETA “turkey” will be attending the hearings with a poster proclaiming, “Just This Once … Be More Like Trump,” to ask everyone, regardless of political affiliation, to follow the president’s example—by pardoning a turkey.

When:    Thursday, November 21, 8:30 a.m.

Where:    Longworth House Office Building, 15 Independence Ave. S.E., Washington, D.C.

“Americans can save animals and improve their own health by impeaching meaty old Thanksgiving meals,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is offering recipes to everyone of any party or none so that they can save animals, their arteries, and the environment by opting for a delicious vegan holiday feast.”

Each year, 45 million turkeys are killed in the U.S. for Thanksgiving. In nature, these animals are protective and loving parents as well as spirited explorers who can roost in trees and run as fast as 25 mph. Turkeys in the wild can live up to 10 years, but those raised for food are normally slaughtered at 5 months old. The young birds are hung by their feet from metal shackles and dragged through an electrified bath. They’re often still conscious when their throats are slit and they’re dumped into scalding-hot water to remove their feathers.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview—offers a free vegan starter kit and tips for enjoying a turkey-free, vegan Thanksgiving on its website.
