The results are in for PETA’s 2019 ranking of the top 10 vegan-friendly cities in the U.S.—and Detroit has landed a spot on the list, coming in at fifth place, thanks to its abundance of vegan twists on standard American fare.
“From sumptuous soul food to nachos, pizza, veggie dogs, and more, the Motor City is fueling a thriving vegan dining scene that’s showing no sign of slowing down,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “The number of American vegans grew by 600% in just three years, and the cities on PETA’s list are meeting the skyrocketing demand for animal-friendly fare.”
Vegan eats abound in Detroit, which is home to Detroit Vegan Soul, a city staple dishing up meals like its “Catfish” Tofu Sandwich and hearty Soul Platter, consisting of mac ‘n’ cheese, smoked collards, maple-glazed yams, black-eyed peas, and a cornbread muffin. Those looking for something to eat on the go can swing by Rocky’s Road Brew, a vegan food truck slinging tacos heaped with fried “chicken” and other dishes. Other great options are the pho and curry topped with roasted tofu at ima, the Detroit FAKE Chicken or Taco Hell pop-ups from Street Beet, the shepherd’s pie (filled with a house blend of Beyond Burger, lentils, and a rich Guinness gravy) at Old Shillelagh, the vegan poutine at Brooklyn Street Local, the vegan Coney dog at Chili Mustard Onions, and the vegan pizzas at Pie-Sci Pizza, made with homemade vegan meats and dairy-free cashew cheese.
Rounding out PETA’s list are San Francisco; Los Angeles; New York City; Portland, Oregon; Orlando, Florida; Dallas; Nashville, Tennessee; Washington, D.C.; and Tulsa, Oklahoma.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
