PETA Supporters Will Demand That University President End Muscular Dystrophy Experiments on Golden Retrievers

Armed with signs proclaiming, “Dogs Are Suffering at TAMU,” a pack of PETA supporters will attend Texas A&M University (TAMU) President Michael K. Young’s State of the University Address on Thursday to urge him to end the school’s muscular dystrophy experiments on dogs.

When:    Thursday, October 10, 10 a.m.

Where:    Memorial Student Union, 275 Joe Routt Blvd. (at the intersection with Houston Street), College Station

PETA has released eyewitness video footage of dogs inside TAMU’s laboratory who struggle to walk, swallow, and even breathe. Under pressure from 500 physicians, people with muscular dystrophy, and PETA supporters, the school recently stopped breeding the dogs, but the experiments continue—even though over the last 38 years, they have failed to produce a cure or treatment that reverses muscular dystrophy symptoms in humans. Yesterday, PETA filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture alleging that TAMU violated animal protection laws in the death of a golden retriever named Lunes.

“The state of Texas A&M will be marked by bad science and cruelty as long as it continues to torment dogs in painful, scientifically flawed tests,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA will remind attendees of Michael Young’s talk that these horrific experiments are happening on his watch—and urge him to take action to end them.”
