Following communications with PETA, Robertet S.A.—the ninth largest flavor and fragrance company in the world—has instituted a new policy banning all experiments on animals unless required by law. The company previously participated in a joint experiment in which it chemically analyzed the characteristics of rosemary leaf extract while experimenters with another company fed 30 mice a high-fat diet to induce obesity, administered the extract to a group of the mice, starved them, injected them with glucose, repeatedly took their blood, and killed and dissected them.

“In rejecting animal testing, Robertet S.A. is in step with public sentiment and scientific advancement, which are increasingly shifting away from this archaic practice,” says PETA Vice President Shalin Gala. “PETA is urging other food and beverage companies to follow Robertet S.A.’s lead and ban cruel, wasteful, curiosity-driven experiments on animals.”

Robertet S.A. joins a growing list of dozens of companies—including Barilla, The Coca-Cola Company, General Mills, House Foods, Kellogg Company, Kikkoman, Lipton, Ocean Spray, PepsiCo, POM Wonderful, Welch’s, Yakult Honsha, and others—that have worked with PETA scientists to replace animal tests with more effective, ethical, and economical non-animal research models.
