What: Today, armed with signs proclaiming, “Eleanor Green: Shut Down the Dog Lab!” a group of PETA supporters will descend on the Primary Care Veterinary Educators Symposium—where Texas A&M University (TAMU) College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences Dean Eleanor Green will be the keynote speaker—and call for an end to TAMU’s muscular dystrophy experiments on dogs. The protest comes one day after school officials confirmed that dogs will no longer be bred at TAMU to have the disease and the university admitted to lying about the breeding.
When: Friday, September 13, 8:30 a.m.
Where: Courtyard by Marriott Pullman, 1295 N.E. North Fairway Rd., Pullman, WA 99163
“PETA is celebrating the end of breeding dogs to develop debilitating muscular dystrophy at Texas A&M, but ending the breeding of these dogs is only a first step. Now, the university must stop tormenting the few remaining ones and release them to decent homes,” says PETA veterinarian Dr. Ingrid Taylor. “PETA will continue protesting until it shuts the dog lab down entirely.”
PETA has released eyewitness video footage of dogs inside TAMU’s lab who struggle to walk, swallow, and even breathe. Those who don’t exhibit symptoms but carry the gene for the disease are used for breeding, and they frantically pace and bite the bars of the small cages to which they’re confined. Thirty-eight years of these tests have failed to result in a single cure or treatment that reverses muscular dystrophy symptoms in humans.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist view of the world. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
