Armed with posters emblazoned with a spoof Canada Goose logo and images reflecting the company’s cruelty to geese and coyotes, PETA protesters will flank the red carpet on the opening night of the Canada Goose–sponsored Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday. And throughout the festival, a PETA mobile billboard—showing a goose’s or a coyote’s face next to the words “I Want You to Change. Don’t Buy Down: Boycott Canada Goose” and “I Want You to Change. Don’t Buy Fur: Boycott Canada Goose,” respectively—will circle the TIFF Bell Lightbox building.
PETA notes that Canada Goose has issued false and misleading statements about “transparency standards” but doesn’t address the fact that those “standards” still permit coyotes to suffer in painful steel traps with a broken leg, lacerations, and hemorrhages for days before being shot or bludgeoned by the trapper. Birds used by the down industry are inevitably sent to the slaughterhouse, where standard practice is to hang them upside down, stun them, and then slit their throats—often while they’re still conscious—before immersing them in scalding-hot water. After a PETA complaint to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, Canada Goose stopped claiming that its standards “ensure” that suppliers don’t abuse animals.
“No film festival should welcome a sponsor whose name is synonymous with cruelty,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is urging the Toronto International Film Festival to cut ties with Canada Goose until the company agrees to stop supporting the torment and death of geese and coyotes for its coats.”
