As students are moving in and classes are about to start, PETA is challenging everyone in the community to think about animals differently with ads on CoGo Bike Share stations near Ohio State University. The ads show a cow, a pig, and a chicken and read, “#EndSpeciesism. Go Vegan.” They’re part of a new national campaign against the archaic belief that despite their extraordinary talents, abilities, and intelligence, other animal species exist for humans to experiment on, eat, wear, and use for entertainment, even though there are compassionate alternatives in every case.

“This generation of students has the power to reject the outdated speciesist attitude that says that animals are nothing more than the sum of their parts—and instead to start regarding them as someone, not something,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA’s ads ask passersby to consider the idea that all animals—from humans to hens—are made of flesh and blood, can feel pain and fear, desire freedom, love their offspring, have personalities, and value their own lives.”

Although it’s 2019, because of prejudice, highly social monkeys are caged alone in laboratories; billions of cows, chickens, pigs, and other animals are cut to pieces in slaughterhouses every year; coyotes are trapped in the wild and their fur is turned into jacket trim; and tigers are whipped to force them to perform in circuses.

PETA—whose motto reads, “Animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way”—encourages everyone to combat speciesism by buying only cosmetics that weren’t tested on animals, choosing vegan food and fashion, staying away from animal circuses, and otherwise rejecting the exploitation of all animals.

The ads are located on CoGo kiosks at the intersections of Neil and King avenues, Neil and W. 11th avenues, N. High Street and King Avenue, N. High Street and W. Fourth Avenue, and W. Lane Avenue and Olentangy Trail. PETA’s #EndSpeciesism ads are also running this month at the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis and the Illinois State Fair in Springfield, and they’ll appear on billboards in several other cities.
