Video: Celebrate National Mutt Day With Missy!

Wednesday (July 31) marks National Mutt Day—and it’s the first one that a special senior dog named Missy will spend indoors. As a new PETA video released today shows, she spent the first 10 years of her life in a makeshift outdoor pen that was so engulfed in junk and trash that she couldn’t even see out of it. PETA’s fieldworkers visited her as often as they could to provide her with shelter, food, fresh water, and affection. Her owner had refused to bring her indoors—but finally, after a decade, a diagnosis of heartworm disease prompted the woman to allow PETA to get veterinary care for the pup and find her a new home.

Missy has started treatment for the disease, and she was given her first bath in 10 years. She also went on her first road trip—to Florida, where she finally gets to live indoors with her new family.

“Adopting a rescue dog is just the only way to go,” says adoptive guardian Terri David. “Missy’s life here will [include] a long walk in the morning. We hope we can take her to the beach.” She continues, “[S]he’ll have a lot of dog friends and just lots of love.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. More information about the group’s work to help dogs and cats is available here.
