PETA Supporters Will Urge John Sharp to End Cruel, Failed Muscular Dystrophy Experiments on Dogs

On Wednesday morning, PETA supporters will visit Texas A&M Chancellor John Sharp’s home for a peaceful protest calling on him to retire the school’s notoriously cruel and unsuccessful muscular dystrophy experiments on dogs now that lead experimenter Joe Kornegay has retired.
When: Wednesday, July 24, 7:30–9 a.m.
Where: Outside Chancellor Sharp’s house, 1 Reed Dr., College Station
“Dogs who’ve been bred to have canine muscular dystrophy are being tormented at Texas A&M, and they never get to go home as Chancellor Sharp does,” says PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo. “PETA is urging him to shut down the dog lab and place the surviving dogs with families so that they can finally know comfort, love, and belonging.”
In late 2016, PETA released eyewitness video footage of dogs inside the university’s laboratory. More than 500 physicians have signed a letter asking for the experiments to end, as have many people with muscular dystrophy. Nearly four decades of these studies—which have led to the deaths of hundreds of dogs—have failed to result in a single cure or treatment that reverses muscular dystrophy symptoms in humans.
