Below, please find a statement from PETA President Ingrid Newkirk in response to reports that a second horse in three days has been killed because of the chuckwagon races at this year’s Calgary Stampede:

Just hours after PETA wrote to Alberta officials to call for an end to the Calgary Stampede’s chuckwagon races, yet another horse died, this time after sustaining a fracture—the same type of injury that caused the deaths of at least two other horses in the last two years. Calgary should be ashamed that horses are paying with their lives for these dangerous and reckless races and should end them now.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. More details about our campaign to end the chuckwagon races is available here.
